Abstract

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a group of persistent organic pollutants. Many of PAHs have carcinogenic properties and thus shall be eliminated from the environment. Because of their lipophilic nature, PAHs can easily contaminate oils, mammals and marine organisms. Hydrophobic adsorbents are widely used to decontaminate water sources from PAHs. Unfortunately, such adsorbents are useless for the purification of oils, fuels and other lipid solutions since the adsorbents have no selectivity towards PAHs and thus will be saturated by components of the hydrophobic matrix. The main problem of sample preparation is the existence of remnants of matrices compounds in an extract In fact, the adsorbent having hydrophilic nature and high affinity towards PAHs is required for selective recovery of these pollutants from the hydrophobic matrix. We recently demonstrated that different types of carbon nanomaterials are capable to firmly bound with PAHs due to intermolecular π-pi interactions. This effect can lead to a new type of PAHs selective adsorbents, which is capable to simplify analytical procedures for determination of PAHs in lipid-containing objects such as oils and marine organisms. A set of organo-mineral hybrid materials will be obtained by covalent immobilization of carbon nanomaterials on inorganic carriers. Two major types of carbon nanomaterials will be investigated: carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) and graphene oxide quantum dots (GOQDs). The particles will be immobilized on inorganic support such as silica gel (SiO2). SiO2-based adsorbents will be explored for selective extraction of PAHs from lipidic solutions for chemical analysis of the contaminants.
